Spider veins on the calf, what's going on?

小腿上出現蜘蛛網,發生咩事?

Have you ever seen spiderweb-like patterns on someone's calves, some even appearing blue? This is varicose veins. Many people suddenly find this condition appearing on their calves one day. Although it affects their appearance, there are no other obvious symptoms, and over time, it is ignored. In fact, this is definitely an issue that we need to address.

Causes

Blood flows from the limbs back to the heart unidirectionally through deep and superficial veins. This requires unobstructed venous channels, effective valves in the inner walls guiding blood flow to the heart, and the propulsive force of muscle contraction in the legs. Venous occlusion is uncommon. Venous disease is mostly due to incompetent valves in the inner walls of the veins. When standing, blood flows backward, leading to prolonged blood stagnation in the distal lower limbs, causing the condition.

The following types of people have a higher chance of developing varicose veins, such as a family history of varicose veins,

prolonged standing, such as teachers, chefs, salespersons, multiple pregnancies, prolonged heavy lifting, or overweight individuals.

Symptoms

Symptoms of varicose veins are not obvious in the early stages, but if left untreated for a long time, various symptoms may appear. Milder symptoms include swelling, heaviness, and soreness in the calves and ankles, usually feeling particularly strong at the end of the day, with a heavy and swollen feeling in the lower limbs such as the calves and ankles. More severe cases will begin to show blue, enlarged veins, initially appearing as spiderweb-like veins and small red blood vessels, followed by swelling, enlargement, and blueness of the veins, appearing like centipede-like patterns on the legs. The most severe cases may develop venous ulcers, which are severe varicose veins, usually occurring at the ankle, possibly accompanied by pain or fluid leakage.

Impact

Varicose veins are easily overlooked. Although the symptoms are mild, they do not significantly affect daily life. However, if not improved promptly, the symptoms may worsen, and in severe cases, it can slow down the healing of chronic wounds and lead to cellulitis, sudden rupture and bleeding of swollen veins, stasis dermatitis, or even phlebitis, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism.

Prevention

1. Wear elastic or compression stockings to prevent pressure buildup in the lower limbs and promote venous return.

2. Exercise moderately to strengthen the muscles of the lower limbs, increasing the propulsive force of muscle contraction, which also helps venous return.

3. Avoid prolonged sitting, standing, and crossing legs to prevent blood stagnation in the lower limbs.

4. Control weight and eat a low-fat, low-salt diet to reduce abdominal pressure and avoid increasing the burden on blood vessels.

5. Avoid smoking and alcohol. Alcohol can accelerate varicose veins, and smoking also increases blood pressure, worsening varicose veins.
